Cosmetic Procedures on the Rise, Thanks to Baby Boomers

Members of the baby boomer generation obviously do not want their 50 or 60 years to show on their faces. As a matter of fact, many “boomers” are head strong on keeping their youthful appearance through different anti-aging procedures and treatments.

Based on the findings of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), different anti-aging operations have enjoyed a steady increase in number over the years. These procedures include face lifts, blepharoplasty or eyelid lifts, Botox injections and fillers. All of these treatments are designed to minimize the appearance of lines, wrinkles, age spots and other signs of aging.

Indeed, the baby boomers may well be on their way to their senior years; but there is no way that they are letting that to be obvious in the way that they look.

Dr. Mark Berman, president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, said that the baby boomers may be getting older, but the definitely still feel young and they want that to look young as well.

He added that the different anti-aging procedures also make people feel much better about themselves after the treatments.

President Berman also said that the number of baby boomers who go for anti-aging procedures does not surprise surgeons at all.

Based on the number of procedures performed by AACS members, there was a 44 percent increase in the number of face lifts done from 2008 to 2009. That brings the total number of face lifts up to 34, 455 surgeries in 2009 alone. Blepharoplasty or eyelid lift procedures went from 42, 602 surgeries in 2008 to 60, 507 surgeries in 2009. That’s a whopping 42 percent increase in a span of one year!

There has been an increase in the number of non-invasive procedures performed, as well. Botox injection procedures went up by 157 percent and procedures that use other types of fillers went up by 245 percent.

The average age of patients who underwent face lifts from 2008 to 2009 was 54.1 years old while that of those who got eyelid lifts us 52.3. The average age of those who received Botox is 46.6 years old while the age of those who went for other fillers is 46.8.
